Founding and Early Years
Established in 1930, Croydon Lodge of Unity No. 5164 was founded at a time of significant societal change. The aftermath of World War I was still felt, and Croydon was transitioning from a town surrounded by open spaces into a thriving residential hub. Horse-drawn transport remained common, and owning a motorcar was considered a status symbol. Meanwhile, technological advances such as “talking pictures” were captivating the world.
Against this backdrop, sixteen dedicated Freemasons laid the groundwork for a new lodge, which became the daughter lodge of Frederick No. 452 and granddaughter of Unity No. 69. In February 1930, the lodge received its official Warrant, and on Saturday, May 3rd, 1930, the Consecration ceremony was held.
Growth and Traditions
From its inception, the lodge focused on growth and tradition. The first Regular Meeting on 25th October 1930 saw the initiation of two candidates and the introduction of a now long-standing custom: each newly initiated member would receive a copy of the Oxford Bible for Freemasons.
By the second Regular Meeting in December 1930, two more initiates joined—Mr. A.H. Bentley and Mr. A.C. Burchell—both of whom would later celebrate the lodge’s 50th anniversary as distinguished members. The lodge also established its Lodge of Instruction to mentor and educate new members.
Expansion and Legacy
The first decade was marked by steady growth. By 1933, membership had risen to 36, including the initiation of Mr. F.W. Hicks, later known as W. Bro. “Freddie” Hicks, a dedicated Charity Steward and Almoner. By the lodge’s tenth anniversary in 1940, membership had reached 49.
Over the decades, Croydon Lodge of Unity has continued to uphold its values of brotherhood, tradition, and service, fostering a strong community that honours its founders’ vision while embracing the future.
Charity
Charity and community service remains a core focus, with the lodge actively supporting both Masonic and local charitable causes.
Members contribute to initiatives such as community outreach programs, fundraising events, and supporting a local youth football team and hospitals.
These efforts exemplify the Freemasons ethos of helping those in need.
